2002 Ford Mustang Timing Cover Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the timing cover on 2002 Ford Mustang?
A: Begin timing cover service by disconnecting the negative terminal of the battery followed by draining the engine coolant because the natural element requires these steps. First remove the crankshaft pulley before removing the water pump pulley and set the power steering pump to the side. The service requires removal of Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) tube together with upper radiator hose and bypass hose. Detach the Camshaft Position sensor together with the heater water outlet tube until you remove the camshaft synchronizer assembly. The technicians should detach both the crankshaft position sensor and lower radiator hose before taking out the wiring harness pin-type retainer and oil filter. The successful water pump removal will need the removal of nuts and bolts but care must be taken to avoid damaging the engine front cover by removing all hidden cap screws. Write down the fastener information before extracting the engine front cover from its position using two dowels after removing the gasket. Inspect the engine front cover and block with the help of clean towels packed inside the oil pan after plugging the oil and coolant holes and treating the gasket surfaces with metal cleaner. The remaining debris should be blown away with compressed air before taking out the shop towels and plugs. Attach the engine front cover gasket using additional sealant before placing the new engine front cover and its bolts. You should tighten all water pump fasteners to 26 Nm while paying attention to exclude number 12 bolt from the tightening sequence. Place the new oil filter as you install the wiring harness pin-type retainer and connect the electrical connector of the crankshaft position sensor. After installing the lower radiator hose and camshaft synchronizer assembly the technician must add the heater water outlet tube with the CMP sensor electrical connector. After connecting the bypass hose to the upper radiator hose the technician should install the power steering pump and water pump pulley as well as the crankshaft pulley. The last step includes filling the engine cooling system before draining and refilling it with clean engine oil while reattaching the battery ground cable.
