2004 Ford E-150 Brake Caliper Parts Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Brake Caliper on 2004 Ford E-150?
A: The first step to service or repair the brake caliper in E-250 E-350 and E-450 models is to remove the disc brake caliper then drain all existing brake fluid before proceeding. A vise should secure the caliper as you drive the pistons out by using low air pressure on the fluid port through a block of wood between the caliper bridge and pistons. The service should proceed by removing both the block of wood and pistons from the system then discarding the piston seals along with boots. The piston bores of the caliper should not be honed since honed pistons remain unavailable for purchase. Replace all caliper piston seals when a leakage occurs and discard the entire unit if you find excessive bore surface damage or corrosion. The assembly procedure requires new piston seals and dust boots with replacement of any brake fluid which saturated or stayed open overnight. Use DOT 3 motor vehicle brake fluid to lubricate the piston boot together with the caliper piston and piston seal and cylinder bores. When installing the caliper piston seal and boot keep the seal free of damage to avoid unintentional dislodgment from the caliper piston. Seal both ends of the caliper bore before pushing the piston inside without extending it. Replace the disc brake caliper afterward.
