2005 Ford E-150 Brake Caliper Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Brake Caliper on 2005 Ford E-150?
A: Service or repair interventions on the E-150 brake caliper start with take-off of the disc brake caliper followed by drain of brake fluid. The caliper needs to be fixed in a vise before taking out the caliper pistons through placing a wood block between the caliper bridge and the piston while using low air pressure to push the pistons out. The service continues by discarding both the caliper piston seals and dust boots after wood block removal. The caliper cylinder bores should not be honed because brake caliper pistons come only with non-honed versions and damaged bores will require a replacement of the entire front disc brake caliper. When assembling the brake system use brand new piston seals together with dust boots to prevent vehicle damage and incorporate new DOT 3 motor vehicle brake fluid during assembly procedures and bleeding tasks. Sufficient lubrication should be applied to the dust boots of pistons and their seals as well as caliper pistons and cylinders before adding caliper pistons. When installing piston seals and dust boots carefully insert them to prevent any damage occurrence. Even pressure should be used to press caliper pistons into caliper bore before installing the disc brake caliper.
