2004 Ford Expedition Timing Cover Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the timing cover on 2004 Ford Expedition?
A: Before you start working on the timing cover turn off the air suspension switch because inflation or deflation of air springs may occur unexpectedly. You must first remove the valve covers and power steering pump together with the cooling fan from the vehicle. Start by disassembling the bolts leading to the coolant pump pulley and then proceed with the crankshaft front seal. Disconnect first the CMP sensor electrical connector followed by removing the CMP sensor bolt. Lift the car and next extract engine oil through the drain plug removal. To start disconnect the A/C compressor electrical connector along with unharnessing the harness using the routing clip before taking the A/C compressor with its secured fasteners removed. You will remove the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor after disconnecting its electrical connector and removing its bolt. Detach power steering and transmission cooler tube brackets through removing their nuts before removing four bolts to lower the vehicle. First remove the drive belt idler pulleys' bolts then take off their nuts before getting rid of two radio interference capacitors. The 15 fasteners together with engine front cover and gaskets need removal yet maintain extreme caution against employing metal scrapers or abrasive tools on sealing surfaces because they may produce leak paths. Seal the oil pan with protective material during cleaning while you treat each gasket mating surface first with a silicone gasket remover and metal surface preparation agent. Install the engine front cover gaskets with silicone gasket and sealant while distributing the material over the cylinder head-to-cylinder block and oil pan-to-cylinder block surfaces. The dowels must have the front engine cover gaskets properly installed before placing the cover onto position then lightly install the bolts. The engine front cover fasteners should achieve a torque of 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.) for Romeo 4.6L units but Windsor 5.4L units require a three-step sequence starting with 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.), then 48 Nm (35 ft. lbs.) on fasteners 6 and 7 before moving to a final 48 Nm (35 ft. lbs.) torque for fasteners 8 through 15. You should install the two radio frequency interference capacitors and their nuts as the first step before fitting the drive belt idler pulleys and their bolts. To prevent water pump pulley rotation you must maintain hold of it then install coolant pump pulley and the bolts. Reposition the automotive vehicle using supports then softly install the bolts before tightening them sequentially by reaching 20 Nm then continuing to a 90-degree angle. Install the transmission cooler tube alongside the power steering tube to the brackets while tightening them with 11 Nm torque for 4.6L engines or 40 Nm for 5.4L engines. Place the CKP sensor while hooking up its wire connection and then put in a fresh crankshaft front oil seal. After installing fasteners on the A/C compressor you should operate the harness routing clip and A/C compressor electrical connector. The power steering pump and new drain plug and oil filter must be installed before lowering the vehicle. You need to install the CMP sensor and bolt after connecting its electrical connector and then reinstall the cooling fan. The mechanic should begin by filling the engine with clean engine oil before starting the engine to fill the cooling system or charge the A/C system before installing the LH and RH valve covers along with another engine oil fill-up. Activating the air suspension switch becomes necessary when this vehicle has the air suspension system.
