2004 Ford Mustang Axle Shaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the axle shaft assembly on 2004 Ford Mustang?
A: Service and repair of the axle shaft assembly requires the vehicle to sit on level ground at curb height while marker points are placed on the rear shock absorbers against their protective sleeve before suspending it to this mark during fastener tightening. The first step requires lifting up the vehicle before removing the wheels together with their associated tires. Marking the pinion flange and driveshaft flange will maintain balance for installation purposes while you must avoid hammering driveshaft components and restrict prying to the designated yoke release area before removing the driveshaft for positioning elsewhere. Apply Rust Penetrant and Inhibitor F2AZ-19A501-A on the rear anti-lock brake sensors to help their release from the rear disc brake adapters when needed. Pre-rake the brake discs and wheel studs with index marks before breaking away rear brake discs while maintaining calipers that do not dangle from brake hoses. Use a suitable strap to secure the differential housing to the jack while you keep it supported by a hi-lift jack. Start the procedure by eliminating the nuts and bolts holding the shock absorbers to the axle followed by disconnection between upper suspension arms and their bushings with the differential housing. Work on the axle by slightly lowering it then taking out nuts and bolts which retain lower suspension arm and bushings to the axle before disconnecting the lower suspension arm and bushings from the axle and removing the axle from the vehicle. Put new bolts on the driveshaft or apply Threadlock and Sealer EOAZ-19554-AA primer to the existing bolts if there are no new bolts available. Proper alignment between the index marks on the driveshaft centering socket yoke and pinion flange must happen before installation. When tightening bolts you should follow a cross pattern method to drive the yoke perfectly against the flange and then raise suspension until marks on the shock absorbers line up before securing the suspension components. High Temperature Nickel Anti-Seize Lubricant F6AZ-9L494-AA needs to be applied to the rear anti-lock brake sensor body before installation at the contact points.
