2004 Ford Ranger Clock Spring Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: What Precautions and Steps Are Involved in Servicing the Clock Spring Assembly on 2004 Ford Ranger?
A: Safety glasses should be worn during Clock Spring assembly servicing to prevent injuries from accidental air bag deployment while you should handle live air bag modules by facing their trim covers away from your body. Hand washing should be thorough to eliminate sodium hydroxide particles remaining after deployment. Connecting probes to air bag module connectors should always be avoided since it can trigger the air bag to deploy. Any air bag module with discolored or damaged trim covers needs a fresh replacement. The system power should first be disabled while also removing both driver air bag module bolts then disconnecting the electrical connector of the driver air bag module. The vehicle needs its wheels strictly facing forward before workers start the steering wheel removal procedure by first removing screws and then releasing the retaining clips from the panel. After removing the five bolts from the lower steering column opening finish panel reinforcement it becomes necessary to remove both the tilt wheel handle and shank and finally the lower steering column shroud. You need to position the upper steering column shroud to reach the Clock Spring retaining clips before disconnecting both the wire harness and electrical connectors of the Clock Spring. Use your fingers to disengage the Clock Spring retaining clip at the lower end before removing the Clock Spring by freeing all the other retaining clips. Before you install a new Clock Spring remove the key when maintaining the rotor in a centered position and prevent the rotor from spinning while you do so. A centering operation requires keeping the outer housing stationary before releasing the rotor to turn it counterclockwise until you feel resistance then moving forward in a clockwise direction approximately 2.25 turns to achieve the center position. Install the Clock Spring onto the steering column where the flats align while inserting the retaining tabs. Connect the cables then direct the wire harness before positioning both the upper and lower steering column covers. Putting back the tilt wheel handle and its shank takes place before fixing the finish panel reinforcement and lower finish panel with care to make sure every screw and clip is properly installed. After installation of the steering wheel subscribers must link the driver air bag module through two bolts before powering up the system to verify proper operation without faults before letting the vehicle go.
