2005 Ford Ranger Clock Spring Parts Q&A

  • Q: What Precautions and Steps Are Involved in Servicing the Clock Spring Assembly on 2005 Ford Ranger?
A: Safety glasses must be worn when working on the Clock Spring assembly because they protect users from accidental air bag detonation while precise handling of air bag modules should be done with the trim cover pointed away from the body. Wash hands completely after deployment since this will eliminate sodium hydroxide residue trapped under the skin. Testing air bag module connectors with probes at any time will automatically trigger air bag release. Exchange the air bag module whenever discoloration or damages appear on its trim covers. Memorizer devices should never be employed for any operational purpose. System depowering is required to start the repair procedure. First disconnect the driver air bag module electrical connector then remove its two bolts. The wheels must be in the straight-ahead position before removing the steering wheel. To proceed start by removing the lower steering column opening finish panel through the process of unscrewing its retaining clips and thereafter taking out the five bolts which secure the lower steering column opening finish panel reinforcement. Untwist the tilt wheel handle and shank followed by separating the lower steering column shroud by unscrewing it. The top steering column shroud needs to be positioned correctly to expose the Clock Spring retaining clips so technicians can disconnect the wire harness with Clock Spring electrical connectors by releasing pin-type retainers. The lower Clock Spring retaining clip needs to be released before pulling out the entire Clock Spring once its other retaining clips are loose. The key must be removed from the steering wheel during Clock Spring replacement when the rotor stays centered and unmoving. For recentering purposes keep the outer housing fixed while releasing the rotor then rotating it counterclockwise until resistance occurs before turning clockwise about 2.25 turns. Neither flat nor retaining tab should interfere with Clock Spring alignment when installing it onto the steering column. After connecting the Clock Spring electrical connectors, install the wire harness before putting back the upper and lower steering column shrouds. Secure the tilt wheel handle and shank until all clips and screws are tightened on the finish panel reinforcement and lower finish panel. The last step involves installing the steering wheel followed by connecting the driver air bag module then securing it with two bolts followed by powering up the system to check the SRS operation before allowing the vehicle to go.
