How to service the tailgate latch on 2004 Ford Ranger?

The first step to work on the tailgate latch requires removal of the tailgate access cover along with its attached screws. Opening the tailgate latch rod retainer enables removal of the tailgate latch remote control from its release link. The pickup bed strikers must have the tailgate support cables removed before you can freely remove the tailgate latch by unbolting it and releasing the latch stop link. When installing the tailgate latch release link maintain its centralized position by pulling its end to the middle before securing the rod retainer onto the thread of the release link. The installation process concludes with reversing the steps of removal.
