- Q: How to service and repair the lower control arms on four-door on 2004 Mercury Sable?A: The service process of lower control arms on four-door vehicles starts with wheel cover removal followed by using tape and compass to measure from the hub center to fender lip when the vehicle stands level on ground. Start by removing the wheel together with its tire from the vehicle. Service on front lower control arms starts by unbolting the component then disconnecting both the parking brake cable and rear anti-lock brake sensor wiring harness when these components exist on the vehicle. Detach the lower control arm from the spindle by first removing the flag bolt and washer followed by the nut because these items will be discarded. The installation of the front lower control arm requires removal of its nut and flag bolt which should then be discarded before extracting both the control arm and adjusting cam. The installation of the rear lower control arm requires a nut and flag bolt removal followed by disposal of the nut and flag bolt before you take out the control arm itself. With a jack stand positioned below the suspension system you should lift the suspension to reach the same spacing between hub center and fender lip that was measured previously. After tightening the nut proceed to lower the suspension system while removing the jack stand. The front lower control arm installation process should begin with the reattachment of rear brake anti-lock sensor wiring harness and parking brake cable followed by bolt installation. You should reattach the wheel with its tire and check wheel alignment while making any needed adjustments.
