- Q: How to service the right-hand exhaust manifold on 2004 Mercury Sable?A: The service of the right-hand exhaust manifold starts with disconnecting the battery ground cable. A technician should remove the cowl vent screen along with the cowl extension before disconnecting the Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) electrical connector. Service begins by removing the exhaust manifold with its EGR valve tube and the exhaust manifold heat shield through bolt removal. First remove the bolts from the catalytic converter exhaust manifold connection before you obtain the six bolts holding the exhaust manifold in place to remove both components along with their gasket which must be thrown away. Installation begins by installing an exhaust manifold gasket before inserting the exhaust manifold on the bolts that need two-step tightening at 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.) followed by 22 Nm (16 ft. lbs.). Connect the catalytic converter through bolt installation and then proceed with the exhaust manifold heat shield installation using its respective bolts. Complete the installation by setting the exhaust manifold against the EGR valve tube then attach the HO2S electrical connector, replace the cowl vent screen and cowl extension before reattaching the battery ground cable.
