- Q: How to service and repair the axle shaft assembly on 2005 Ford Expedition?A: Service or repair work on the axle shaft assembly must begin by using the switch in the left rear quarter trim panel to disable air suspension electrical power to stop unexpected air spring inflation or deflation while hoisting or jacking or towing. Position the vehicle on a hoist and unfasten the front wheel with its tire before taking off the dust cap and securing axle nut to discard. Prior to the integrated wheel end disconnect removal begin by unscrewing the vacuum/vent line from its port. Then detach the three bolts retaining the wheel end disconnect to the knuckle. First remove the tie end rod nut before detaching the tie end rod from the steering knuckle and dispose of the rod nut. Move forward by unfastening both the upper ball joint nut until you can detach the joint from the steering knuckle before discarding the upper joint nut. During this step you must be careful to prevent damage to the hub seal while swinging the steering knuckle outward because the constant velocity shaft should remain inside. Progress with enough clearance provides space to detach first the outboard end of constant velocity shaft joint along with the integrated wheel end disconnect from the steering knuckle hub bearing followed by the integrated wheel end disconnect from the outboard constant velocity joint housing. The technician should dismantle the halfshaft from the axle by removing six bolts which retain it at the axle before pulling the assembly from the vehicle. Check for spline lash as the first step to take before installing the halfshaft nut. The installation ends by doing the reverse order of removal and installing fresh components such as the axle nut and tie rod end nut as well as upper ball joint nut.
