• Q: How to service the intake manifold on 2005 Mercury Mountaineer?

  A: One must begin service of the intake manifold by disconnecting the battery ground cable. First separate the air cleaner outlet pipe before detaching all attachments of the Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) tube and brake booster vacuum hose and main vacuum harness fitting and Evaporative Emissions (EVAP) tube from the intake manifold. Also remove the EVAP tube retainer. The exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system module electrical connector should be disconnected initially while detaching the wiring harness retainer followed by disconnecting the EGR system module vacuum fitting until the exhaust manifold to EGR system module tube can be disconnected. When installing the EGR system module tube fitting follow a torque specification of 34 Nm (25 ft. lbs.). The first step involves taking off the electronic throttle body electrical connector and the Throttle Position (TP) sensor electrical connector after removing all its bolts. Restart the system by torquing the electronic throttle body bolts to 9 Nm (80 inch lbs.). Follow these steps to remove the bolts before taking away the intake manifold along with the gaskets. Tighten the intake manifold to 11 Nm (8 ft. lbs.) when reinstalling. Metal scrapers and wire brushes along with abrasive tools must be strictly avoided for sealing surface cleaning since they create leak paths through scratches and gouges. Prevent any leakage by cleaning the sealing areas before checking gasket condition to replace them when necessary. The process of reverse installation will complete the reattachment.
