  A: First step to work on Ford 9.75-inch ring gear rear drive axle and differential includes placing the vehicle in NEUTRAL position on a hoist. Start the service by removing first the wheel and tire assembly and then the differential housing cover for lubricant draining. To proceed with the service the mechanic should first detach and wire aside the rear disc brake calipers followed by removal of the rear brake discs. Take off the differential pinion shaft by discarding the lock bolt then extracting the shaft from its position. When pushing the axle shafts inboard during U-washers removal protect the rubber O-rings present in the U-washer grooves. Remove the two axle shafts while checking that their associated wheel bearing oil seals stay unharmed. Installation requires grease application to the wheel bearing oil seal lip before installing two axle shafts with due attention to oil seal and rubber O-ring protection. Place U-washers on the buttons of axle shafts and draw the shafts toward yourself. Reinstall the differential pinion shaft by directing its hole toward the case lock bolt hole and fasten it with a new lock bolt.
