2006 Ford Expedition Exhaust Pipe Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Service the Exhaust Pipe Y-Pipe with Dual Catalytic Converters on 2006 Ford Expedition?
A: Begin service of the exhaust Y-pipe with dual catalytic converters when the vehicle is in NEUTRAL position and raised on a hoist. The heated oxygen and catalyst monitor sensors need disconnecting before you remove the catalytic converter-to-exhaust manifold nuts to dispose of them. The clamping mechanism connecting RH catalytic converter and LH catalytic converter requires loosening. You need to disconnect and remove the LH converter with caution to protect its manifold outlet and converter inlet as well as its studs. The RH converter installation requires removal of the bolts and flag nuts securing the RH converter-to-muffler flange followed by supporting the muffler with an appropriate jack stand while detaching isolators from the muffler assembly and lowering the muffler assembly. Drive the transmission mounting bracket isolator cap bolt and the isolator cap out while taking away the RH converter from service. It is necessary to take heated oxygen and catalyst monitor sensors away. To install the parts service the connector interface of the manifold outlet flare with the catalytic converter inlet flare simultaneously with the muffler inlet pipe and catalytic converter. New fasteners and gaskets should be used for installation while applying anti-seize lubricant to sensor threads. Install the heated oxygen and catalyst monitor sensors with a torque of 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.) whenever they are removed. You should install the RH catalytic converter-to-LH catalytic converter clamp if necessary before placing the RH catalytic converter. After that, install the nuts loosely to the exhaust manifold. Proceed by installing the transmission mounting bracket isolator cap first as well as loosely installing the bolt before securing the isolators to the muffler assembly and adding new RH catalytic converter-to-muffler bolts with flag nuts. Fit the LH catalytic converter before installing its exhaust manifold nuts loosely. Start by-aligning the exhaust system and then proceed to tighten both new catalytic converter nuts on the RH side following this order: upper nut to 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.) and lower nut to 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.). Screw the transmission mounting bracket isolator cap bolt to 35 Nm (26 ft. lbs.) and wrap the RH catalytic converter-to-LH catalytic converter clamp to 48 Nm (35 ft. lbs.). Toward the installation of the LH catalytic converter first tighten the inner nut followed by outer and inner nut torque at 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.). Complete the process by tightening both RH catalytic converter-to-muffler bolts and flag nuts to 48 Nm (35 ft. lbs.) then reinstall the heated oxygen and catalyst monitor sensors.
