2007 Ford Expedition Exhaust Pipe Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Service the Exhaust Pipe for a Y-Pipe Dual Catalytic Converter on 2007 Ford Expedition?
A: This exhaust Y-pipe dual catalytic converter serves as a two-part unit which enables independent maintenance of its separate RH and LH converter components. Hoist the vehicle in NEUTRAL mode. Vehicle manufacturers should remove the 4WD transfer case skid plate if their vehicles are equipped with this feature. Start by disconnecting the electrical connectors of heated oxygen and catalyst monitor sensors before using a suitable jack to support the transmission. The heat shield bolt of the LH side should be removed followed by the LHS heat shield, then evaporative emissions canister assembly bolt and finally the RH heat shield bolt. Remove the transmission mount nuts followed by the 4 crossmember bolts and the crossmember from the vehicle. You should first loosen the cap bolt which anchors the exhaust and transmission mounting bracket. RWD vehicle owners should detach 3 bolts to separate their exhaust from its mounting bracket which is attached to the exhaust Y-pipe dual catalytic converter. 4WD vehicles require removal of the exhaust Y-pipe dual catalytic converter before the exhaust and transmission mounting bracket will free itself. First eliminate 4 bolts which secure the exhaust and transmission mounting bracket then remove and discard the exhaust Y-pipe dual catalytic converter-to-exhaust manifold nuts and its assembly bolts. A person should carefully uninstall the exhaust Y-pipe dual catalytic converter while avoiding harm to the manifold outlet flare and converter inlet flare and studs. The exhaust and transmission mounting bracket can be removed when working on the exhaust Y-pipe dual catalytic converter. Installation of a new RH catalytic converter-to-LH catalytic converter clamp becomes necessary any time this clamp needs to be unfastened. Separating the RH catalytic converter from the LH catalytic converter requires you to loosen their clamp then grind the spot weld and clean the uneven surface areas especially when the clamp requires removal. Fasteners should remain loose until complete assembly of components is finished while working towards the vehicle's front side. Clean the mating surfaces of the exhaust manifold outlet flare as well as the exhaust Y-pipe dual catalytic converter inlet flares and the exhaust Y-pipe dual catalytic converter-to-muffler assembly surfaces but avoid damaging the flares and studs throughout the cleaning process. New fasteners should be used when installing heated oxygen and catalyst monitor sensors. Apply anti-seize lubricant to their threads before torquing them to 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.). A new RH catalytic converter-to-LH catalytic converter clamp requires bolt alignment toward the vehicle front and installation of the separated RH and LH catalytic converters. The exhaust and transmission mounting bracket of 4WD vehicles needs installation to the exhaust Y-pipe dual catalytic converter when replacement occurs. Position the exhaust Y-pipe dual catalytic converter in the vehicle while keeping away from damage to the manifold outlet flare and converter inlet flare as well as the studs. The exhaust Y-pipe dual catalytic converter-to-exhaust manifold nuts should be installed loosely before adding 4 exhaust and transmission mounting bracket-to-transmission bolts which require a torque of 90 Nm (66 ft. lbs.) for 4WD vehicles. The exhaust and transmission mounting bracket requires fitting onto the exhaust Y-pipe dual catalytic converter through the 3 bolts which should be tightened to 90 Nm (66 ft. lbs.). Then install the 4 crossmember bolts together with the crossmember while tightening them to 90 Nm (66 ft. lbs.). Proceed to tighten the exhaust and transmission mounting bracket nuts at 103 Nm (76 ft. lbs.). Begin by fastening the RH heat shield bolt to 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.), proceed with the LH heat shield bolt, LH heat shield and evaporative emissions canister assembly bolt installation at the same torque value of 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.). Begin by reattaching electrical connectors for the heated oxygen and catalyst monitor sensors while installing exhaust Y-pipe dual catalytic converter-to-muffler mounting bolts but do not over-tighten them. Then install the exhaust system for proper alignment. The skid plate of the transfer case requires installation in 4WD vehicles with appropriate fastening to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).
