2006 Ford Explorer Heater Core Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the auxiliary heater core and evaporator core housing on 2006 Ford Explorer?
A: The first step to fix the auxiliary heater core and evaporator core housing involves hoisting the vehicle in NEUTRAL position. Empty the engine coolant during service recovery of refrigerant. Start the procedure by pulling out the LH quarter trim panel then disconnect the headliner duct from the auxiliary climate control housing. The next step requires removal of auxiliary evaporator inlet and outlet line fitting nuts with O-ring seal disposal and thermostatic expansion valve (TXV) filter removal. Reinstall the line fittings at 8 Nm (71 lb-in). Separate the heater hose clamps before disconnecting the heater hoses to release any remaining coolant which will flow out from the auxiliary heater core thus preventing fluid from entering the passenger area. Reinstall the floorpan bracket nuts by tightening them to 8 Nm (71 lb-in) after removal of the two nuts. First remove the two auxiliary heater core and evaporator core housing bolts before tightening them to 6 Nm (53 lb-in) during installation and then removing the housing nut to tighten it to 6 Nm (53 lb-in) during reinstallation. The installation requires disconnecting the electrical connector from the auxiliary harness before removing both the auxiliary heater core and evaporator core housing from the system. The process of reinstalling requires following the removal procedure in reverse while cleaning and lubricating the coolant hoses with water when needed then inserting new O-ring seals together with the new TXV filter. The correct amount of clean PAG oil needs to lubricate the refrigerant system before engine cooling system filling and lastly completing the evacuation process followed by leak testing and refrigerant system charging.
