2006 Ford Focus Intake Manifold Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the intake manifold on 2006 Ford Focus?
A: The repair and servicing of the intake manifold starts with hoisting the vehicle to its proper height in the neutral position. Begin by removing the cooling fan components then unfasten the lower intake manifold bolt together with the air cleaner pipe outlet. Always free the tube vent and loose the clamps before removal. Start by removing the accelerator snow shield by detaching the pin-type retainer of the evaporative emissions hose and then unfastening the screw and pin-type retainer followed by the snow shield removal. The first step requires removal of the throttle body cables before taking out the three mounting bolts that will allow positioning of the accelerator bracket and cables aside. Use a quick release locking ring depressor to sever the connections of the throttle position (TP) sensor electrical connector and idle air control (IAC) valve electrical connector and fuel vapor return hose alongside the power brake booster vacuum tube. First disconnect the fuel rail pressure and temperature sensor vacuum hose followed by detaching the wiring harness pin-type retainer connected to the electrical connectors of the intake manifold runner control actuator and manifold absolute pressure sensor. The procedure for 2.0L engines includes disconnecting the secondary air injection (AIR) vacuum supply hose, the swirl control valve electrical connector, and removing the bolt then the oil level indicator tube while marking bolt locations for precise reinstallation because 3 different bolt sizes are used. First disconnect the seven bolts securing the intake manifold then lift it to unplug the knock sensor electrical connector before removing the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) hose until the intake manifold can be extracted with its exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) tube. The installation process includes inspecting and installing new intake manifold gaskets when needed and installing the EGR tube while tightening it to 41 ft. lbs at 55 Nm. First install the position the intake manifold after connecting the PCV hose then reattach the KS electrical connector. The installation of lower center bolt on 2.3L engines requires an assistive tool with a 6-inch hose and 5/16-inch diameter to help bolt placement in marked locations before bolting the intake manifold and tightening each bolt to 18 Nm (13 ft. lbs.). Screw in the intake manifold with its seven bolts before tightening them to 18 Nm (13 ft. lbs.). O-ring lubrication with engine oil must be done before installing the oil level indicator tube and two bolts which need to be tightened at 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.). The swirl valve electrical connectors must be connected along with pin-type retainers before marking bolt positions for 2.0L engines. Install the intake manifold with seven mounting bolts by tightening them to 18 Nm (13 ft. lbs.) after lubricating the O-ring then install the oil level indicator tube and bolt by tightening to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.). The swirl control valve gets connected with its electrical connector while the air vacuum supply hose gets attached if present. Firmly tighten the lower intake manifold bolt to 18 Nm (13 ft. lbs.) while you connect the MAP sensor electrical connector along with the IMRC actuator electrical connector and attach the wiring harness pin-type retainer. The installation consists of attaching the three hoses and four connectors one by one starting with the fuel rail pressure and temperature sensor vacuum hose then continuing with the power brake booster vacuum tube into the quick release fitting followed by the fuel vapor return hose and ending with the IAC valve electrical connector and TP sensor electrical connector. The installation requires hooking up the cables and installing the accelerator bracket along with its tightening to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.) torque specification. You must install the accelerator control snow shield while setting the retainer to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.) and connecting the evaporative emissions hose with the pin-type retainer before putting on the air cleaner outlet pipe and securing its clamps at 4 Nm (35 inch lbs.). Terminate the process by fitting the cooling fan motor along with its shroud assembly.
