2006 Ford Ranger Automatic Transmission Filter Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the In-Line Automatic Transmission Filter on 2006 Ford Ranger?
A: The service and repair of transmission fluid in-line filter must start after placing the vehicle into NEUTRAL position on a hoist. After transmission overhaul or with existing in-line fluid filter the installation of new in-line fluid filter should happen. The maintenance process requires replacement of the existing in-line fluid filter and its associated components or addition of a new in-line fluid filter kit according to existing equipment conditions. Non-internal repairs do not require either an in-line filter or filter kit for installation. New and authorized Ford remanufactured transmissions require the supplied in-line transmission fluid filter for installation. Initiate work by taking away the retainer clips from cooler lines after you disconnect the lower transmission cooler tube fitting. Remove the section of the return line then clean and smooth both ends of the steel tubing. Tighten each end of the tubing using ferrule connectors by hand followed by applying an additional 1-1/2 turns to properly seat the ferrules in the connectors. The filter requires proper installation within the fluid cooler return line where the red arrow faces the transmission while pointing toward the transmission from the fluid cooler to prevent internal transmission damage. Install either rubber hoses or steel tubing when the entrance to the filter has a 60° maximum bend or less. The necessary hose lengths should be selected for filter installation while clamps need to be securely tightened. Fitting and tightening the lower transmission cooler tube requires 28 Nm (21 ft. lbs.) torque before adding the retainer clips to cooler lines. Clean a small part of the transmission fluid pan before installing a sticker then add clean automatic transmission fluid to the transmission while checking proper operation and inspecting for any leaks in the filter. The installation for vehicles equipped with an OTA cooler requires following the same methodology to position the filter properly into the fluid return line before conducting the final inspection steps.
