    A: The first step for repairing or servicing the steering column shaft requires a process of depowering the supplemental restraint system (SRS). The vehicle should be set to neutral mode for hoisting procedures and the intermediate shaft slider bolt should be removed then bolted again with a torque of 35 Nm (26 ft. lbs.). The service requires replacement of the steering column-to-intermediate shaft bolt along with disposal of the original bolt while tightening the new bolt to 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs.). The replacement of the intermediate shaft-to-steering gear bolt requires installation of a new bolt while discarding the old one and torquing it to a value of 35 Nm (26 ft. lbs.). Use two new intermediate shaft bearing plate nuts after taking away the old hardware and plate components and tighten these nuts to 9 Nm (80 inch lbs.). Reverse the removal procedure by first checking that the steering column shaft remains stationary while disconnecting to protect the clock spring. In case the shaft rotates please remove and recenter the clock spring.
