2006 Lincoln Town Car Rack And Pinion Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: What Precautions Should Be Taken Before Beginning Service on the Rack and Pinion Steering Gear on 2006 Lincoln Town Car?
A: Service work on the rack and pinion must start with shutting off air suspension electrical power to stop air springs from unexpected changes in pressure which can make the vehicle shift. Turn off the air suspension service switch according to operational specifications when it is present. Install a suitable holding device onto the steering wheel to keep it facing forward. The intermediate shaft should not rotate when disconnected from the rack and pinion since it might harm the Clock Spring; Clock Spring removal and recentering is required if rotation occurs during this process. The engine compartment bolt needs to be removed for detaching the intermediate shaft from the rack and pinion then tighten the bolt to 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs.) before reinstallation. The vehicle should sit on a hoist at NEUTRAL. The hex-holding tool should secure the stud to keep it from rotating while workers remove the nuts that detach the tie rods from the wheel knuckles but both parts must reach 80 Nm (59 ft. lbs.) torque when reinstalled. Use new O-ring seals whenever you disconnect rack and pinion lines and remove the clamp plate bolt then disconnect the lines by discarding old seals while tightening new ones to 18 Nm (13 ft. lbs.). The variable assist electrical connector should be disconnected from the rack and pinion before removing the rack and pinion-to-crossmember nuts which need to be tightened up to 103 Nm (76 ft. lbs.) when reinstalling. After removing the rack and pinion inserts you must resecure the rack and pinion studs with 20 Nm torque setting when you reinstall the unit. Follow the installation steps in reverse order while using fresh O-ring seals whenever disconnecting lines from their components. The system testing concludes with filling the system and leak testing followed by returning the air suspension service switch to the ON state.
