- Q: How to service the steering shaft on 2006 Lincoln Town Car?A: The first step to service the steering column shaft includes disabling the supplemental restraint system through power disconnection then securing the steering wheel at straight-ahead position with an empty ignition. Steering wheel rotation needs to be blocked when disconnecting the intermediate shaft to protect the Clock Spring from damage because shaft rotation requires Clock Spring removal and recentering. The installation procedure requires steering column bolt removal and shaft disconnection following which new bolt tightening should be at 48 Nm (35 ft. lbs.). After removing the upper intermediate shaft bearing nuts proceed to tighten them to 11 Nm as per installation requirements. Follow by removing and discarding the lower intermediate shaft-to-steering gear bolt before extracting the shaft while you will tighten the new bolt to 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs.) at reinstallation. Recovery of the overall process involves performing the removal operations in reverse order.
