- Q: How to Service and Repair the Steering Shaft on 2007 Ford Crown Victoria?A: The first step of servicing the steering column shaft starts with depowering the supplemental restraint system and positioning the steering wheel straight ahead while removing the ignition key. Steering wheel rotation must be prevented when working on the steering column intermediate shaft to protect the Clock Spring because rotated intermediate shafts require removing and repositioning of the Clock Spring. First remove and discard the steering column bolt attached to the upper intermediate shaft before disconnecting the shaft and tighten the new bolt to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft). The two upper intermediate shaft bearing nuts need removal before installation. Workers should tighten these nuts to 11 Nm (8 lb-ft). First remove and discard the lower intermediate shaft-to-steering gear bolt before removing the shaft as you will need to tighten the new bolt to 30 Nm (22 lb-ft) when reinstalling. Last step is to repackage the components before installing them and relighting the SRS system.
