2007 Ford E-150 Leaf Spring Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the rear leaf spring on 2007 Ford E-150?
A: The vehicle must be in neutral position on a hoist before starting any repairs or servicing to the rear leaf spring. A suitable jack should be used to support the rear axle. Start by removing the shock absorber lower nut and bolt then continue by taking away the 4 U-bolt nuts from the rear spring followed by the plate before uninstalling the 2 U-bolts. The leaf spring assembly can be removed after discarding both the leaf spring front bracket bolt and flagnut and the leaf spring shackle-to-bracket bolt and flagnut. The technician should also dispose of the shackle-to-leaf spring nut along with bolt and shackle. The leaf spring shackle requires proper placement before installing its bolt and nut but without tightening. Place the rear spring before installing the shackle-to-rear bracket bolt and flag nut just until they reach full contact without any additional tightening. Follow by installing the spring-to-front bracket bolt and flag nut just until they reach the required tightness. Secure the upper spring plate by placing both U-bolt nuts before tightening them until achieving a small amount of resistance. The suspension requires the shackle-to-rear bracket bolt and the shackle-to-leaf spring nut to reach 133 Nm (98 ft. lbs.) during the tightening process when the suspension is at curb height. The spring-to-front bracket bolt should be tightened to 350 Nm (258 ft. lbs.). Succeeding steps to fully tighten the U-bolt nuts require an X-type method that spans five stages starting with Stage 1 at 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.) rising to Stage 2 at 100 Nm (74 ft. lbs.) then Stage 3 at 150 Nm (111 ft. lbs.), moving to Stage 4 at 200 Nm (148 ft. lbs.) before reaching Stage 5 at 225 Nm (166 ft. lbs.). You should install the shock absorber lower nut followed by its bolt while tightening it to 80 Nm (59 ft. lbs.).
