2007 Ford F-150 Timing Cover Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the engine front timing cover on 2007 Ford F-150?
A: A proper beginning to service and repair engine front covers requires keeping it clean because loose materials entering the oil and coolant systems can cause engine failure. The service begins with coolant pump and camshaft synchronizer and crankshaft front seal removal and disconnection of the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor electrical connector. Begin engine front cover service by detaching wiring harness retainers from stud bolts first followed by draining engine oil and reinstalling the drain plug and tightening it to 26 Nm (19 ft. lbs.). To start the procedure remove the oil filter and both pan-to-front-bolts from the engine then separate the bracket retaining nut for the transmission tube when present. Put a wrench on the belt tensioner accessory drive bolt to proceed with removing it. Subsequently loosen the power steering pump bolts so the pump can slide about 25mm (1 inch) forward. The bolt securing the A/C compressor and power steering pump bracket should be removed first then you should remove the concealed cap screw behind the oil pump housing to avoid harming the engine front cover. Remove the engine front cover from the studs while discarding the gasket and remember which studs have different locations for later reinstallation. Clean the sealing surfaces by avoiding abrasive tools and stuff the oil pan with new shop towels while plugging the oil and coolant passages and applying silicone gasket remover and metal surface prep to prepare the gasket surfaces. Thread sealant should be applied to all studs followed by installation of the engine front cover studs before torquing them up to 7 Nm (62 inch lbs.). Clean up the sealing zones and re-apply silicone gasket the sealant when the engine front cover remains uninstalled beyond four minutes. Installation of new engine front cover gasket should include proper placement of coolant pump and gasket with sequential fastener tightening. Install all engine front cover fasteners with loose finger tightening before tightening capscrew No. 12 to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.) and all remaining hardware to 28 Nm (21 ft. lbs.). Attach the transmission cooler tube bracket while securely tightening its nut to 20 Nm (15 ft.lbs.). First, install the accessory drive belt tensioner and its bolt while tightening it to 55 Nm (41 ft. lbs.). Then install and tighten the two oil pan-to-engine front cover bolts to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.). Connect the CKP sensor electrical connector then install new oil filter while tightening it securely to 16 Nm (12 ft. lbs.). Following these steps, reattach the wiring harness retainers. Fasten the crankshaft front seal with camshaft synchronizer and coolant pump pulley using a torque of 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.). Position the A/C compressor as well as the power steering pump pulley bracket brace using two bolts and two nuts then tighten the bolts to 48 Nm (35 ft. lbs.) and the nuts to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.). Put the power steering pump into its position as you tighten the front lower bolt before moving onto the rear lower bolt and upper bolts and torque them to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.). The last installment includes attaching the accessory drive belt alongside the cooling fan and its shroud before adding clean oil and properly bleeding the cooling system.
