2008 Ford F-150 Timing Cover Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Engine Front Timing Cover on 2008 Ford F-150?
A: The first step of servicing the engine front cover requires complete cleanliness to stop outside materials from entering oil and coolant conduits that might result in catastrophic engine failure. The service and repair of the engine front cover starts with coolant pump and camshaft synchronizer removal followed by crankshaft front seal removal. After disconnecting the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor electrical connector you must detach the wiring harness retainers from engine front cover stud bolts. First drain the engine oil then reattach the drain plug with sufficient torque of 26 Nm (19 lb-ft). Untighten the two oil pan-to-engine front cover bolts before extracting the oil filter. The procedure requires removal of retaining nut followed by setting aside the transmission coolant tube support bracket. First remove the bolt which supports the accessory drive belt tensioner before releasing the power steering pump bolts. Next slide the entire pump approximately 25 mm (1 inch) forward. Toss the bolt and detach both the A/C compressor along with the power steering pump bracket brace. The oil pump housing has a secret cap screw which requires your attention during removal to prevent damages to the engine front cover. Take out the four studs from the engine block before discarding the gasket while keeping track of their original placements for assembly purpose. The installation process requires sealing components in the oil and coolant paths to stop contamination while using a plastic tool to clean the seals before installation without scratching the surfaces. The oil pan needs clean shop towels for packing its exposed section before plugging oil and coolant passages. Use silicone gasket remover and metal surface prep to clean the gasket surfaces. Clear away remaining debris by blowing compressed air before taking away the towels and plugs. Thread sealant should be applied to the studs and cap screw then install the engine front cover studs and tighten them to 7 Nm (62 lb-in). Secure application of the engine front cover must occur within four minutes of installation or else cleaning of the sealing surfaces followed by silicone gasket and sealant application will be necessary. Position the engine front cover gasket next while installing the coolant pump together with its gasket before properly tightening all fasteners sequentially. Fasten the engine front cover fasteners initially by hand but tighten cap screw No. 12 to 10 Nm (89 lb-in) and all other fasteners to 28 Nm (21 lb-ft). Instal the transmission cooler tube bracket after position and fasten its associated nut to 20 Nm (15 lb-ft) torque. Screw the accessory drive belt tensioner and its bolt tightly to 55 Nm (41 lb-ft) while you also tighten the two oil pan-to-engine front cover bolts to 10 Nm (89 lb-in). Fasten the new oil filter with 16 Nm torque before connecting the CKP sensor electrical wires and securing wiring harness retainers. Fasten the crankshaft front seal together with the camshaft synchronizer and the coolant pump pulley using 25 Nm (18 lb-ft) torque. Position the A/C compressor together with the power steering pump pulley bracket brace before tightening all bolts to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft) while the nuts require a torque of 25 Nm (18 lb-ft). Slide the power steering pump inside the engine compartment before bolting down the front lower bracket and moving to secure the rear lower and two upper sections to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft). The process ends with accessory drive belt installation followed by cooling fan and fan shroud assembly and clean oil addition and proper cooling system filling and bleeding.
