  • Q: How to service and repair the rear brake caliper on 2007 Ford Freestar?
    A: Begin repairs and servicing of the rear brake caliper when the vehicle is in NEUTRAL position and situated on a hoist. Remove the parking brake lever arm connection from the parking brake cable end before proceeding to disconnect the parking brake cable and conduit from the brake caliper. Remove the brake caliper flow bolt and two copper washers which can be thrown away. The service begins by taking out the two caliper guide pin bolts and the brake caliper as the next step. During new caliper installation position the guide pin and locator pin boots appropriately to avoid damage. Silicone grease should be used to evaluate and lubricate both guide pin and locator pins. Begin by fastening the bottom guide pin caliper bolt first and then proceed to tighten the top guide pin caliper bolt to 33 Nm (24 ft. lbs). Secure the brake caliper flexible hose with newly added copper washers and knead the brake caliper flow bolt until it reaches 55 Nm (41 ft. lbs) torque. The parking brake cable and conduit need reconnection to the brake caliper before linking the cable end to the lever arm of the brake caliper. Bleeding of the brake system should follow as the last step before performing a proper operation test. Reserve DOT 3 brake fluid from approved motor vehicle categories since it protects brake elements from permanent damage and handle brake fluid leaks promptly with water on painted surfaces or plastics.
