2007 Ford Freestar Steering Shaft Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Steering Shaft on 2007 Ford Freestar?
A: All work on the steering column shaft must start by placing the vehicle in neutral position and securing it on a hoist. Activation of the supplemental restraint system (SRS) must carry out before positioning the steering wheel in a straight-ahead position followed by the key removal to secure the steering column. The first task requires removal of the upper steering column-to-intermediate shaft bolt along with torque measures at 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs) for final installation. Position the intermediate shaft dust boot to the side followed by taking out the lower intermediate shaft-to-steering gear bolt which needs tightening to 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs) when reinstalling. Complete the intermediate shaft removal then follow the installation steps exactly the opposite before starting the supplemental restraint system (SRS). The steering column should not move when the intermediate shaft is unsoldered due to risk of clock spring damage. If shaft movement occurs the clock spring needs removal and centering to repair the damage.
