2007 Lincoln MKZ Shift Cable Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Shift Cable on 2007 Lincoln MKZ?
A: The repair process for gearshift cables requires the removal of heater core and evaporator core housing along with battery and battery tray. Clear the spring clip from the cables without damaging it before you remove the gearshift cables from the shift mechanism so you can pull the spring clip out while rotating it 90 degrees upward. The process demands gentle prying of the shift cable retainer while the cables must be disengaged from the transaxle bracket. First remove the clamp nut and gearshift cable clamp then extract the restraint control module (RCM) before positioning the insulation blanket to the side. Releasing the floor from the two gearshift cable nuts allows the cables to become free. The cable nuts need to be tightened to 8 Nm (71 inch lbs.) during reinstallation. Caution must be taken during cable removal from the shift lever assembly to protect retainer hardware before extracting the shift cables through the bulkhead to reach the interior. Put the grommet in with the arrow facing upward when placing cables through the dash panel for installation and follow the removal steps backwards when performing gearshift cable adjustments.
