The first step for steering column shaft maintenance starts with using supplemental restraint system (SRS) depowering procedures while putting the steering wheel into a straight-ahead position without an ignition key. Steer away from turning the steering wheel during intermediate shaft disconnect since it could damage the Clock Spring. Reinstallation of the Clock Spring might be necessary if the intermediate shaft rotates. Disconnect the intermediate shaft by removing its upper steering column bolt first. Then discard this hardware and install the new bolt with 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs) torque tightness after installation. Before attaching the new bearings install each one while tightening them to 11 Nm (8 ft. lbs). First remove the lower intermediate shaft-to-steering gear bolt and discard it before extracting the shaft while tightening the new component to 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs). The installation process ends with following the opposite order of the removal procedure.
