2007 Mercury Mariner Oil Pan Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the oil pan on 2007 Mercury Mariner?
A: Service and repair of the oil pan starts by positioning the vehicle in NEUTRAL on a hoist. Disconnect the outlet pipe which serves as the air cleaner exit. Radiate the 2 top bellhousing-to-engine bolts by 5 mm (0.19 inch) but do not exceed this distance because it harms the transmission. AWD vehicle repair requires equal torsional looseness for both rear lower engine-to-bellhousing bolts as well as the 2 upper engine bracket-to-power transfer unit (PTU) bolts. After positioning the vehicle in neutral on a hoist remove in sequence the 7 retainers along with the LH splash shield and the oil level indicator and tube. Begin the transmission removal process by first loosening each of the 2 front lower bellhousing-to-engine bolts by 5 mm (0.19 inch) then follow this step with liberating the 1 rear lower engine-to-bellhousing bolt for manual transmissions or the 2 for automatic transmissions by same amount for front-wheel drive (FWD) vehicles. Lift out the 2 oil pan-to-bellhousing bolts alongside the 2 bellhousing-to-oil pan bolts to permit a 5 mm (0.19 inch) movement of the transmission backward. Subsequently, drain engine oil while installing the drain plug with torque of 28 Nm (21 ft. lbs.). Unfasten the 4 engine front cover-to-oil pan bolts while also removing the 13 bolts that secure the oil pan. The recommended tool for cleaning sealing surfaces during installation is a plastic scraper instead of metal tools and scrapers. After a 10-minute time frame following the sealant application to the oil pan you must clean the sealing area before drying it. Fit the mating surfaces with a 2.5 mm (0.09 inch) bead of silicone gasket and sealant then put the oil pan onto the engine before installing the oil pan bolts with finger-tight tension. Start with tightening the engine front cover-to-oil pan bolts to position the oil pan evenly with the engine block and finish the torque at 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.). The procedure requires a 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.) torque value for oil pan bolt installation according to the tightening order. When working on FWD vehicles slide the transmission and engine by starting with alternating one forward and one rearward lower bolt tightening to 48 Nm (35 ft. lbs.). AWD vehicle installation requires alternating the 1 upper engine-PTU bracket bolt with 1 front lower bolt by first tightening the bracket bolt to 45 Nm (33 ft. lbs.) followed by tightening the front lower bolt to 48 Nm (35 ft. lbs.). Lastly, the remaining upper engine-PTU bracket bolt requires tightening to 45 Nm (33 ft. lbs.) and the remaining front lower bolt needs tightening to 48 Nm (35 ft. lbs.). Follow by installing the 2 bellhousing-to-oil pan bolts at 48 Nm (35 ft. lbs.) and the 2 oil pan-to-bellhousing bolts to the same torque of 48 Nm (35 ft. lbs.). The customer should reconnect the oil level indicator and tube and install the LH splash shield with tight 9 Nm torque on its 7 retainers and for AWD models torque the 2 rear engine-to-bellhousing bolts to 48 Nm. To complete the installation fill the engine with clean engine oil then reinstall the air cleaner outlet pipe followed by tightening the 2 bellhousing-to-engine bolts to 48 Nm (35 ft. lbs.).
