2008 Ford E-150 Transmission Pan Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Transmission Pan of the Torqshift Automatic Transaxle/Transmission on 2008 Ford E-150?
A: The first step to service the Torqshift automatic transaxle/transmission fluid pan requires the vehicle to sit on a hoist in neutral position while removing the drain plug to drain the fluid. The procedure starts with removing the transmission fluid pan along with its gasket and filter while paying attention to extract the transmission fluid filter seal gently to protect the seal bore which may result in transmission failure. Check the transmission fluid bore for any existing seal after which you can remove it. The installation of new high efficiency sump filter (HESF) requires using an appropriate wider and deeper bottom pan to avoid cavitation, filter cracking and transmission damage. Begin the installation of the new transmission fluid filter and seal assembly only if all old fluid filter seals have been properly removed. Follow a crisscross pattern when tightening the transmission fluid pan bolts while you install the gasket and fluid pan at 20 Nm (15 lb-ft). Replace the transmission fluid drain plug by applying 25 Nm (18 lb-ft) torque. Fill the transmission with specified fluid only using 7.0L (7.5 qt) of new fluid through the filler tube. Failure or operational problems will be prevented. Use the engine start then test gear range engagement while moving the selector lever through all positions. Check and adjust the transmission fluid level using 0.24L (0.5 pt) additions while the engine runs at normal temperature of 66 - 77° C (150 - 170° F) in neutral gear. This step requires the fluid stays inside the hot range cross-hatched area of the transmission fluid level indicator.
