2008 Ford E-250 Drive Shaft Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to Service the Rear One-Piece Drive Shaft on 2008 Ford E-250?
A: Start driveshaft servicing on the rear one-piece unit only when the vehicle has its neutral gear engaged and rests on a hoist. Measure for reference points on the driveshaft flange yoke together with the pinion flange and on the driveshaft yoke beside the transmission tailshaft to retain driveline balance. The removal of four driveshaft-to-pinion flange bolts requires utmost caution against hammering on either the driveshaft components or its parts. Instead, a suitable pry bar should be used to disconnect the driveshaft flange yoke from the pinion flange by applying precise pressure to the designated region. Lower the driveshaft before sliding it off from the output shaft after disconnection. Check for damage on the extension housing seal then change it when necessary. Apply grease to the slip-yoke spline before examining paint markings that should already exist on the transmission output shaft end and the driveshaft front. You should use either factory-made paint marks or index marks to perform the installation based on the specific paint markings during the driveshaft setup. Install the drive flange yoke onto the pinion flange with the index marks correctly positioned then apply four new bolts to the driveshaft-to-pinion connection by tightening them with even torque using a cross pattern until reaching 112 Nm (83 lb-ft) final torque.
