2008 Ford Edge Clock Spring Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Clock Spring Assembly on 2008 Ford Edge?
A: Begin the Clock Spring service procedure by taking out the driver air bag module. Check that the yellow warning light of the air bag system illuminates since the removal of the restraints control module (RCM) fuse is standard when the ignition switch is ON. A vehicle must pass a complete inspection of its supplemental restraint system before it can be returned to customers without existing faults. Repairs necessitating new components should be followed by returning to the original part while rerunning the diagnostic process. Steering wheel removal requires extra caution that minimizes rotational movement of the Clock Spring rotor from its straight-ahead position since damage could occur in vehicles with steering wheel rotation sensor or adaptive headlamp systems. Use tape to secure the Clock Spring rotor on the steering column shaft while maintaining straight-wheel position before the next steps start. The technician should first push the upper steering column shroud tabs to raise its position then unfasten three screws from the bottom shroud before disconnecting the Clock Spring electrical connector. Take away the tape and check that rotor remains at its central position. You need to align the steering wheel rotation sensor ring arrows before you remove its two screws that will detach the Clock Spring. Installation of the Clock Spring requires stabilization of the housing while taking turns with the rotor which should stop at counterclockwise resistance then progress to clockwise turns of approximately 2.25 to reach 12 o'clock wire position and connector placement. During Clock Spring placement continue with procedure of aligning both sensor ring and housing arrows. If no one monitors the Clock Spring throughout installation then the centralizing steps need to be performed again. Place the Clock Spring inside the multi-function switch housing until it reaches its complete seating position then fasten it with screws. The process involves connecting the Clock Spring electrical connection before using three screws to fix the lower steering column shroud and then attaching the upper shroud. The installation concludes with placing and securing the steering wheel but only after taking out the Clock Spring sealing key when a new Clock Spring was installed. The driver air bag module follows for completion.
