2008 Ford Ranger Axle Shaft Parts Q&A
Q: How to service and repair the axle shaft assembly of a 7.5-inch ring gear rear drive axle/differential on 2008 Ford Ranger?
A: The process starts with placing the Ford 7.5-inch ring gear rear drive axle/differential on a hoist in neutral gear then stripping off the wheel and tire and subsequent differential housing cover removal through bolt extraction and drainage of the rear axle housing. The next step is to disconnect the differential housing cover through bolting removal along with draining the lubricant from the rear axle housing. Differential pinion shaft and rear brake drums removal requires discarding of the lock bolt followed by extracting the shaft. When you pull the axle shafts towards the center for U-washer removal avoid damaging both the O-rings that seat in the axle shaft grooves. Pull out the two axle shafts yet maintain protection of the wheel bearing oil seal from damage. Apply grease to the wheel bearing oil seal lip and then install both axle shafts without harming the rubber O-rings. Attach the Position U-washers facing outward at each end of axle shaft buttons before pulling the shafts to extend outside. Install the differential pinion shaft by positioning its hole through the case lock bolt hole then fasten it with a new lock bolt secured at 30 Nm (22 lb-ft). The rear brake drums should be installed after cleaning up both the rear axle housing and differential housing cover until they remain free of oil residue. At this stage apply new silicone sealant over a continuous surface. The differential housing cover must be installed before 15 minutes expires from the time you put on the sealant unless you redo the sealant application. When installing the cover bolts they should be torqued to a maximum of 45 Nm (33 lb-ft). The procedure requires adding 2.4L (5 pt) of stated lubricant into the rear axle followed by tightening its fill plug to 52 Nm (38 lb-ft) torque. Reinstallation of wheels and tires completes the process.
