2008 Ford Ranger Axle Shaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to service and repair the axle shaft assembly for the 8.8-Inch Ring Gear rear drive axle/differential on 2008 Ford Ranger?
A: The first step for servicing or repairing the axle shaft assembly of the Ford 8.8-Inch Ring Gear rear drive axle/differential requires suspending the vehicle on a hoist while keeping it in NEUTRAL. First remove the rear wheel then tire before taking off the brake drum. You must drain the lubricating fluid before taking out the differential pinion shaft by first discarding the bolt then pulling out the shaft. Use care to extract the U-washer while monitoring the rubber O-ring within the groove and extend the axle shaft toward the inside during removal. The procedure requires taking out the axle shaft yet maintaining the wheel bearing oil seal without any damage. Before installing the axle shaft apply grease to the lip area of the wheel bearing oil seal then install the component being sure not to harm the oil seal. The U-washer should be placed at the axle shaft button end while carefully extending the axle shaft to complete the installation. A new bolt is unavailable therefore Threadlock(R) should be applied to existing bolt threads to secure the differential pinion shaft by aligning the bolt hole to the case while installing a new pinion shaft lock bolt at 30 Nm (22 lb-ft). Last, replace the brake drum followed by differential housing cover installation while lubricating it with correct fluid then reattaching the rear wheel with tire.
