For servicing the differential cover of a Ford 8.8-Inch Ring Gear rear drive axle start by placing the vehicle in NEUTRAL position and hoisting it. The service begins with removing differential housing cover bolts to drain the lubricant from the housing while removing each of the 10 bolts. Clean both differential housing surfaces along with the cover surfaces until they contain no oil to stop contamination before new cover installation. Enable the installation of the differential housing cover by applying a continuous line of silicone sealant followed by installation within 15 minutes to prevent re-application of new sealant. The 10 bolts should be tightened to 45 Nm (33 lb-ft) immediately after installation. The Traction-Lok axle servicing process requires adding 118 ml (4 oz) of friction modifier ahead of filling it with 2.4L (5 pt) of rear axle lubricant whereafter install the fill plug with a torque of 52 Nm (38 lb-ft). The silicone sealant requires one hour of cure time prior to adding lubricant into the axle.
