The service process for the differential cover of the Ford 8.8-Inch Ring Gear High Torque Rear Drive Axle starts with placing the vehicle into neutral gear and hoisting it. Start the process by uninstalling the 10 differential housing cover bolts followed by draining lubricant from the rear axle housing. Next drain the differential housing before taking off its cover. The installation of new silicone sealant requires machined surface cleaning of the rear axle housing and differential housing cover while making sure to protect the inside of the rear axle from contamination. A continuous bead of sealant needs application on the differential housing cover before installation within 15 minutes or the existing sealant will need replacement. After mounting the cover secure it with the 10 bolts while applying torque to 45 Nm (33 lb-ft). You should add friction modifier to a total volume of 118 ml (4 oz) before filling the rear axle with 2.54L (5.37 pt) of rear axle lubricant by removing the filler plug. To complete the process reinstall the filler plug and fasten it to 52 Nm (38 lb-ft).
