2008 Ford Ranger Exhaust Pipe Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Exhaust Pipe for 3.0L and 4.0L Engines on 2008 Ford Ranger?
A: The service and repair of 3.0L and 4.0L exhaust Y-pipes starts with putting the vehicle into NEUTRAL position before placing it on a hoist for service. Disconnect the electrical wiring from both heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) and catalyst monitor sensor. The service requires right-hand side exhaust Y-pipe removal of bolts together with flagnuts and gasket from assembly-to-muffler and tailpipe connections while discarding these components. The service begins with removing the transmission mount and isolator-to-transmission bolt and left-hand exhaust Y-pipe-to-right-hand side of exhaust Y-pipe nuts which are then disposed of. Leaning the right-hand side of the exhaust Y-pipe on a suitable jack you should loosen but not remove its right-hand side exhaust Y-pipe-to-exhaust manifold nuts. Install a suitable support tool to the left-hand side of the exhaust Y-pipe and remove the left-hand side exhaust Y-pipe-to-exhaust manifold nuts which need discarding. Move on to eliminate both left-hand side exhaust Y-pipe components and left-hand side exhaust Y-pipe-to-right-hand side of the exhaust Y-pipe gasket before throwing away the gasket. Ahead of tossing away the nuts from the Y-pipe exhaust section you must first discard both the right-hand exhaust Y-pipe-to-exhaust manifold nuts and the right-hand exhaust Y-pipe component. The installation process should exclude using oil or grease-based lubricants on the isolators since they will cause rubber damage. Place the right-hand side of the exhaust Y-pipe into the vehicle while installing new right-hand side of the exhaust Y-pipe-to-exhaust manifold nuts loosely on all surfaces. Position first the left-hand side of exhaust Y-pipe into the vehicle before loosely installing new left-hand side of exhaust Y-pipe-to-exhaust manifold nuts. Begin installation with the new left-hand side of exhaust Y-pipe and right-hand side of exhaust Y-pipe nuts which are to be installed loosely. Perform next the mounting and torquing of transmission mount and isolator-to-transmission bolt to 90 Nm (66 lb-ft). Secure the right-hand side of the exhaust Y-pipe-to-muffler and tailpipe assembly gasket while placing the right-hand side of the exhaust Y-pipe-to-muffler and tailpipe assembly bolts along with new flagnuts. Proceed with this operation by beginning with exhaust Y-pipe assembly-to-exhaust manifold nut tightening to 40 Nm (30 lb-ft) followed by left-hand side of exhaust Y-pipe-to-right-hand side of exhaust Y-pipe nut tightening to 40 Nm (30 lb-ft) and concluding with right-hand side of exhaust Y-pipe-to-muffler and tailpipe assembly bolt tightening to 40 Nm (30 lb-ft). Connect the HO2S and catalyst monitor sensors electrical connectors while checking that exhaust system isolators have zero load. Perform exhaust system alignment if isolators remain at a non-zero load.
