The removal procedure for the 4.6L engine starts with disconnecting the upper and lower fittings while removing the EGR system module-to-exhaust manifold tube. You should remove four exhaust Y-pipe flange nuts which are distributed two each on right-hand and left-hand sides and dispose of these nuts. The eight exhaust manifold securing nuts need removal together with discarded parts that also require the exhaust manifold gasket to be removed. The sealing areas must be prepped with metal surface preparation methods as specified by the packaging instructions. The eight exhaust manifold-to-cylinder head studs and the exhaust manifold should be cleaned before you inspect them. Discard all eight of these studs. The sealing surfaces should be cleaned by using metal surface prep instead of abrasive tools such as metal scrapers or plastic scrapers. Position eight fresh exhaust manifold-to-cylinder head studs before tightening all of them to 12 Nm (106 lb-in). Install the exhaust manifold on the 4.6L engine when using new gaskets by adding eight nuts that should reach 20 Nm (177 lb-in) tightness. The 5.4L engine requires installation of the new exhaust manifold having new gaskets along with eight new nuts that need torque to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft). The Y-pipe flange should be positioned correctly before installing two right-hand and two left-hand nuts that receive a torque of 40 Nm (30 lb-ft). Tightening the two fittings of the EGR system module-to-exhaust manifold tube on the 4.6L engine requires a two-step process of initial manual tightening followed by final torques to 42 Nm (31 lb-ft). Finally, reinstall the engine cover.
