2009 Ford Edge Steering Angle Sensor Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the Steering Angle Sensor Module (SASM) on 2009 Ford Edge?
A: The service process for the Steering Angle Sensor Module (SASM) starts with removing the Clock Spring and the two SASM bolts. Unplugging the SASM electrical connector is the first step before removing the SASM. When servicing the SASM on Edge, MKX and vehicles with Active Park Assist requires users to straighten the front wheels facing forward before connecting the SASM electrical connector and rotating the sensor clockwise until it reaches maximum rotation followed by two and one-half counterclockwise rotations. The SASM position PID (SWA POS) should display approximately 0 degrees when measured with a scan tool before disconnecting the SASM electrical connector. If the display shows any value other than 0 degrees the user should repeat the sensor alignment steps before connector removal. All other vehicles require the same initial steps before sensor alignment by positioning the front wheels forward before rotating the sensor clockwise to its stopping point and continuing with counterclockwise motion for two and one-half turns. Minimal adjustment of the SASM ring alignment between its arrows enables correct positioning before inserting the sensor ring into the multifunction switch housing. Secure the SASM electrical connector and attach the two SASM bolts while tightening them to 1 Nm (9 lb-in) level and return the Clock Spring. A correct alignment of the SASM through the scan tool will produce DTCs in the Restraints Control Module that requires clearing with a scan device. The IVD Initialization sequence under scan tool direction should be executed to calibrate the ABS module for vehicles including Edge as well as MKX and any model with Active Park Assist.
