2009 Ford Explorer Exhaust Pipe Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Exhaust Pipe with Dual Catalytic Converters on 2009 Ford Explorer?
A: Start the exhaust Y-pipe with dual catalytic converters repair process by first placing the vehicle into neutral position and suspending it on a hoist. The exhaust system needs support from a proper jack system. Use associated tools to disconnect the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) and catalyst monitor sensor (CMS) electrical connectors. The exhaust Y-pipe dual catalytic converter requires removal of two bolts and two nuts together with the gasket before disposal of the nuts and gasket. The installation process begins by taking out the transmission support crossmember as well as the exhaust Y-pipe dual catalytic converter-to-exhaust manifold nuts which need to be discarded. You need to remove the Y-shaped exhaust pipe with its double catalytic converter. New nuts must be used when installing the exhaust Y-pipe dual catalytic converter-to-exhaust manifold connection while keeping it loose to start. Mount the exhaust Y-pipe dual catalytic converter onto the exhaust manifold while keeping the new nuts loose to hold its position before torquing them to 8 Nm (71 lb-in) along with additional torque if needed. For the exhaust Y-pipe dual catalytic converter-to-muffler assembly installation use two new nuts as well as a new gasket while tightening the nuts to 40 Nm (30 lb-ft). The four new nuts connecting the exhaust Y-pipe dual catalytic converter to the exhaust manifold should be tightened to 40 Nm (30 lb-ft). Put back the transmission support crossmember before you reconnect both HO2S and CMS electrical connectors. The system maintenance process requires a check on exhaust system isolators to verify their zero load status; this will need the exhaust system alignment procedure if they have a non-zero load reading.
