2009 Ford F-150 Steering Shaft Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Steering Shaft on 2009 Ford F-150?
A: Initiating repairs or servicing of the steering column shaft begins with hoisting the vehicle when the transmission is set to neutral. The Hunter (R) 28-75-1 steering wheel holding device along with similar alternatives should maintain the steering wheel at a straight-ahead position. Preventing the steering column shaft from rotating during intermediate shaft disconnect is essential because it can damage the clock spring; when rotation does occur the clock spring needs to be recentered. Begin the procedure by removing the bolt from the upper steering column shaft to disconnect it from the steering column before installing a new bolt which should be tightened to 30 Nm (22 lb-ft). Detach the upper steering column shaft from the lower steering column shaft by removing the bolt which you should discard before installing a fresh bolt that requires tightening to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft). The correct installation of new bolts requires a torque setting of 12 Nm (106 lb-in) while you also need to replace the two bolts together with the dash seal and upper steering column shaft. Splice the lower steering column shaft from its position on the steering gear by removing the bolt and disposing it and replacing it with a new bolt which should then be tightened to 30 Nm (22 lb-ft). Steering column shaft bolts must always be replaced with new ones since their reuse will result in fastener failure and dangerous loss of steering control responsible for vehicle occupant safety risks. Perform the installation step by following the reverse order of the removal process.
