    A: The first step for clutch disc and pressure plate servicing and repair of 5.4L, 6.8L and 6.4L engines starts with removing the transmission. Index the clutch pressure plate and flywheel when they will be put back during reinstallation. Begin the service by removing bolts from the clutch pressure plate along with the pressure plate itself and the clutch disc. The transmission input shaft pilot bearing needs replacement if you find any misalignment, looseness, scoring, discoloration, wear, broken rollers or seal damage when examining the bearing. The clutch disc friction surface should be smoothened with emery cloth and the disc should be tested for wear using needed replacement criteria including oil saturation, worn rivets, broken springs, and spline wear. The clutch pressure plate friction surface must be cleaned while the levers need inspection for wear and the friction surface for scoring, burning, distortion, or warping. If any conditions exist you must replace these components. The flywheel clutch surface should be cleaned while the technician checks it for cracks, heat checks, glazing, scoring or grooves.
