2009 Ford Flex Clock Spring Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Clock Spring Assembly on 2009 Ford Flex?
A: Service and repair of the Clock Spring assembly should start with Supplemental Restraint System depowering followed by functional and fault-free verification of the system before returning the vehicle to the customer. Uninstall the driver air bag module along with removal of the steering wheel. Proceed with disconnecting the steering wheel rotation sensor electrical connector and then unscrew its mounting screws one at a time. Remove the Clock Spring electrical connector then loosen and take out the two screws which secure the Clock Spring. Check that the Clock Spring center position is accurate because incorrect positioning will lead to premature failure. Excessive rotation of the Clock Spring inner rotor can lead to internal ribbon wire breakage because of excessive extension. Install the anti-rotation key only after installing the wheel unless it has been removed previously; in that case center the Clock Spring by rotating the inner rotor in a counterclockwise motion until you feel light resistance followed by clockwise rotation for two revolutions to reach the 12 o'clock position. Strive to install the steering wheel only when driving wheel alignment verifies its straight position facing forward. When installing the steering wheel, drivers should first remove the anti-rotation key only after they use a new Clock Spring and next reinstall the driver air bag module. The procedure concludes with repowering of the SRS.
