2009 Ford Flex Air Bag Control Module Parts Q&A

  • Q: What are the crucial steps to follow when servicing the Air Bag Control Module after a crash on 2009 Ford Flex?
A: The inspection of both Restraints Control Module (RCM) and impact sensor mounting regions for any effects of deformation requires attention in vehicles that have experienced crashes as part of mandatory servicing procedures. Service technicians must restore all damaged areas to their original production configuration. A complete replacement of the RCM and sensors is required even when air bags have not been triggered because it prevents fatal injuries. Handle the RCM while it is connected only when the ignition is ON because any alteration to its initial horizontal position can lead to Safety Canopy(R) accidental deployment. The installation of any new RCM requires Programmable Module Installation (PMI) to stop system failures. When the proper RCM fuse is taken out under ON ignition conditions the air bag warning indicator will become visible before releasing the vehicle which must have both an operational Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) and no detected faults. Start by turning off SRS power and dismounting the front seats and removing the LH and RH floor console lower trim panels. Disconnect the small and large electrical connectors only after properly pinching the thumb tab and fully pivoting the connector position assurance lever in the backward position. You should remove the three bolts keeping the RCM in position. First install the RCM while securing its bolts with 12 Nm (106 lb-in) torque. Before linking up the large electrical connector users must confirm the connector position assurance lever has completed its full arc and the connector should face the right alignment to dodge potential damage. Press the connector gently until you hear an audible click after which you should pivot the connector position assurance lever toward the RCM. Proceed to attach the small electrical connector before you reinstall the floor console lower trim panels together with the front seats. When finishing the PMI you must execute the SRS repowering step if the RCM received replacement.
