2009 Ford Focus Brake Shoe Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the brake shoes on 2009 Ford Focus?
A: Beginning the brake shoe maintenance requires first removing the parking brake control boot through clip release followed by moving the boot above the handle. Checking the brakes for temperature safety before moving the parking brake control into its complete position. A releasing of tension on the parking brake cable occurs through adjustment nut loosening. Next, remove the brake drum. Work to remove hold-down clips and pins from their positions then carefully prevent wheel cylinder piston falls before using a suitable tool to keep pistons inside wheel cylinder bores while separating brake shoes from the wheel cylinder. Remove the shoes from the backing plate followed by disconnecting the parking brake cable by pushing the lever inward and releasing it from the lever. Begin the replacement process by removing the lower and upper return springs followed by extraction of the primary shoe from the strut and brake shoe adjuster through shoe outward motion and strut and adjuster disconnection. Start by lowering the strut when extracting the support shoe from its position because the strut support spring remains under tension. Disconnect the parking brake return spring next. Apply silicone grease to brake shoe contact points on the brake backing plate after cleaning as well as checking the points for foreign objects between mating surfaces. Installation requires executing the reverse of the removal steps while setting the internal auto-adjuster and centralizing the brake shoes to the brake drum before adjusting the brake shoes and parking brake cable.
