2009 Ford Focus Parking Brake Cable Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the parking brake cable on 2009 Ford Focus?
A: The first step for fixing the parking brake cable requires you to disconnect the floor console followed by releasing the parking brake. Place the vehicle on a hoist while in NEUTRAL before finishing adjustment of the parking brake cable adjustment nut to its ultimate thread length. You should support the exhaust pipe to protect the exhaust flexible pipe before installing new exhaust tailpipe and muffler assembly nuts. Start by setting the exhaust tailpipe and muffler assembly to the side along with removing and discarding the muffler flange nuts. To install the new nuts apply torque to 47 Nm (35 lb-ft) and remove the hanger isolators. Start by removing the exhaust center hanger isolator then break free 4 nuts holding the exhaust center heat shield before removing 5 nuts on the exhaust rear heat shield which is attached to the floor panel. Mark and sleeve locations on the outer cable conduit for parking brake cable clips at each end need to be recorded during separation from the equalizer. Disconnect the parking brake cable from its retaining clips followed by unmounting the rear air deflectors by unscrewing them and unfastening their clip. Extract the 2 parking brake cable guide bolts from the floor panel by using 23 Nm (17 lb-ft) torque specification which you will reinstall later. Follow that with the removal of the parking brake cable from its bracket. The rear wheel speed sensor bolt needs removal when present while the sensor must be set aside during installation so you can torque it to 9 Nm (80 lb-in). To remove the brake backing plate components start by pulling the actuating lever forward while taking out the cable from the lever followed by compressing the clip to pull the parking brake cable through the brake backing plate. First disconnect the parking brake cable at its cable union before removing the 2 parking brake cable guide bolts for separating the cable guide from lower control arms. Install all components with a torque of 3 Nm (27 lb-in). After pulling the parking brake cable through the lower control arm it should be removed. You will identify the LH intermediate cable through its green sleeve positioning. Installation requires a backward procedure of removal steps alongside appropriate adjustment of the parking brake.
