2009 Ford Fusion Crankshaft Position Sensor Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to Service the Crankshaft Position Sensor on 2009 Ford Fusion?
A: A hoist must support the vehicle in neutral mode before starting the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor servicing. The service begins by removing four screws to set aside the RH fender splash shield followed by existing the 6 pin-type retainers and the RH splash shield assembly. Twist the crankshaft clockwise until the crankshaft pulley hole stands at the 3 o'clock mark then remove the cylinder block plug. Turn the crankshaft clockwise until it reaches the crankshaft TDC timing peg whereby the No. 1 cylinder attains top dead center (TDC) position. Then install the crankshaft TDC timing peg before continuing to turn the crankshaft until it meets the peg. Remove the bolts connecting the CKP sensor before disconnecting its electrical connector then discard the sensor. The crankshaft pulley requires 6 mm x 18 mm standard bolts to be hand-tightened to protect the front cover. The new CKP sensor installation requires the provided alignment tool to position it correctly; place both sensor bolts loosely before using the tool to adjust the CKP sensor. Finally, tighten the bolts to 7 Nm torque. Before final tightening, apply the alignment tool to adjust the CKP sensor position and follow by tightening the 2 CKP bolts to 7 Nm (62 lb-in). Connect the CKP sensor wiring while unfastening the 6 mm pulley bolt from the crankshaft and replace the block opening with a plug which should be tightened to 20 Nm (177 lb-in). In the last step reinstall the 6 pin-type retainers and the RH splash shield while using the four screws to fasten the RH fender splash shield into place.
