2009 Ford Mustang Catalytic Converter Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service the catalytic converter on a 4.0L engine on 2009 Ford Mustang?
A: Placing a 4.0L vehicle in neutral position followed by positioning it on a hoist constitutes the starting point for catalytic converter service. Use a jackstand to support the muffler before removing the exhaust coupler that leads to the catalytic converter assembly through disconnection of the intermediate pipe. Keep the exhaust coupler for disposal. The reinstallation process requires 48 Nm (35 lb-ft) torque while the sequence of progressively tightening by 10 Nm (89 lb-in) should be followed. All heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) and catalyst monitor sensor (CMS) connectors must be disconnected first to prevent harm before starting any exhaust system work or component removal process. Start by disconnecting the electrical connectors from both HO2S sensors then moving on to separating the CMS connectors from their sensors. Set a jackstand below the catalytic converter to support it before tightening all catalytic converter nuts manually until you remove and dispose of the 2 RH catalytic converter-to-exhaust manifold nuts that will be installed with a torque of 45 Nm (35 lb-ft). Perform this step for both left and right catalytic converter-to-exhaust manifold nuts. After removing the jackstand along with the catalytic converter you should discard the 4 catalytic converter-to-exhaust manifold studs before replacing them with new ones and tightening them to 40 Nm (30 lb-ft). Use a Scotch Brite(R) pad to clean the manifold outlet flare mate with the catalytic converter inlet flare and also the catalytic converter outlet flare mate with the muffler inlet pipe while gently removing any potential foreign objects from entering the catalytic converters. Set a jackstand beneath the rear outlet of the catalytic converter and position it correctly while maintaining the proper alignment of the manifold studs through the pipe flange without damaging them. Reverse the removal sequence to install the converter by orienting it properly against the exhaust manifold and setting hanger rods to the center of isolators. It is essential to use fresh nuts and studs for converter-to-manifold connections along with new exhaust couplers.
