2009 Ford Ranger Battery Cable Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the battery cables on a 2.3L engine on 2009 Ford Ranger?
A: Starting services on 2.3L battery cables requires a hoisted vehicle in neutral position. Disengage the battery while removing the bolt that moves the body ground terminal an opening of 12 Nm (106 lb-in) for better attachment upon final installation. The A/C cut-off switch connector should be disconnected if the system has this component. Start by removing the three battery cable locators from the battery tray and fender followed by removing the battery junction box (BJB) cover then removing its two nuts before positioning the BJB terminal aside while tightening it to 12 Nm (106 lb-in). To install the battery cable fender well bracket secure the bolt at 17 Nm while also positioning it aside and then tighten it to 17 Nm (150 lb-in) when reinstalling. Position the battery cable engine bracket aside by removing the bolt and secure it with a torque of 12 Nm (106 lb-in) upon replacement. To install the battery cable starter solenoid terminal properly, first discard the starter solenoid terminal cover then eliminate the nut keeping the terminal in position before securing it to 12 Nm (106 lb-in) torque. You should tighten the battery cable starter solenoid wire terminal to 5 Nm (44 lb-in) following reinstallation. Place the battery cable engine ground terminal to one side while securing the nut with 27 Nm (20 lb-ft) torque when replacing it. An operation on the battery cable starter solenoid involves removing its cable locator from the starter stud bolt followed by disconnecting the oil pressure switch connector and taking out the cable locator from the bell housing bracket. Disconnect the battery cable locators on the engine oil level indicator tube bracket before putting the generator B+ protective cover to the side together with the nut and battery cable generator B+ terminal which should be tightened to 8 Nm (71 lb-in) torque. After disconnecting the electrical connector, disconnect the A/C compressor electrical connector (if equipped) before ending with the battery cable removal. Follow the opposite steps used for removal to install the unit.
