2009 Lincoln MKX Clock Spring Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Clock Spring Assembly on 2009 Lincoln MKX?
A: Service and repair procedures for the Clock Spring assembly start with removing the driver air bag module. The customer must inspect the SRS before vehicle handover through an ON fuse check of the proper Restraints Control Module (RCM). The rotor of the Clock Spring assembly should remain fixed at zero steering angle after steering wheel removal when working on vehicles that incorporate steering angle sensors with adaptive headlamps to protect system components from damage or failure. Before taking off the steering wheel it is crucial to verify that road wheels face forward. You should tape the Clock Spring rotor at the steering column shaft to keep it in position before releasing the two tabs that allow you to position the upper steering column shroud upward while taking out the lower steering column shroud's three screws. Detach the Clock Spring electrical connector before taking off the tape from the Clock Spring rotor while maintaining its central location. To perform the removal, eliminate the 2 screws which allows extraction of the Clock Spring. Reinstall a used Clock Spring only when it sits properly in the center position to stop premature damage from occurring. Keep the Clock Spring outer housing fixed in place while rotating the rotor opposite the direction of the clock until you meet resistance and turn it another 2.25turns clockwise until the wires align with the 12 o'clock position. Position the steering angle sensor ring arrow with the housing arrow. During Clock Spring installation when no one is caring for it, the centralizing process must be performed again. After ensuring complete insertion of the Clock Spring into the multifunction switch housing hook up its electrical connector. Apply the centralizing procedure once again for the Clock Spring if the technician departed the vehicle without supervision before moving forward with attaching the steering shrouds and upper cover. The next installation step involves attaching the steering wheel while removing the Clock Spring sealing key only when you installed a new Clock Spring before securing the driver air bag module.
